<image:title>Story Mechanics Blog - 7 Habits | #2: Begin with the End in Mind - Begin with the End in Mind</image:title>
<image:caption>As Stephen Covey writes, all things are created twice. There’s a mental creation and then physical creation, a blueprint and then construction. The most effective builders, travel guides, pilots, and writers understand that a plan is the best way to make sure you get to where you want to go. Habit 2 is one of my favorite habits because it works on two levels, making it extremely versatile for writers. Beginning with the end in mind is more than an outline Now, you plotters out there were probably already pumping a fist when you read the title of this post while the rest of us pantsers and plantsers* were resigning ourselves to do better. You can take this advice literally, but I feel the spirit of Habit 2 is more expansive than to outline or not to outline. As we’ll talk about below, this habit encourages big-picture thinking that works for writers of all kinds.</image:caption>

<image:title>Story Mechanics Blog - 7 Habits of Effective Writers | Habit 1: Be Proactive - You can be proactive or reactive</image:title>
<image:caption>Contrary to what you might believe, you have the initiative and the responsibility to make things happen. You always have a response ability—the ability to respond. Whenever you encounter difficult circumstances or realities, you have two options: you can be reactive or proactive. Most authors likely default to a reactive response, often without realizing it. Listen to the language that’s used all the time: “The industry is so slow.” “No one wants to read a book like mine.” “I can’t get an agent.” “There’s so much I have to learn and I don’t know where to start.” “If only things would change.” All these boil down to how you see yourself and your work. Who are you anyway? What can you do? It turns out, you can do quite a lot.</image:caption>

<image:title>Story Mechanics Blog - Using Your Character’s Internal Conflict as a Revision Tool</image:title>
<image:caption>While I talk through some examples from my own story as an example, think of the inner conflict as a thread that runs throughout the story. It should be woven through each scene from beginning to end. Originally, I had imagined that Ransom’s inner conflict was that he is stuck in survival mode, doing whatever it takes to get by and sometimes hurting others in the process. He’s got a temper, but, in earlier drafts, I’d written him as defensive when someone would try to pull him out of his survivor way of thinking and take a good look at himself. The most common technique he’d use to deal with uncertainty and fear was deflection, changing the subject. Now, as I worked on this story over time, my understanding of who Ransom was as a character changed. In a sense, that original idea is still there, but I went deeper. When I came back to this manuscript with a fresh eye, it was clear to me that my main character’s inner conflict stemmed from a different place. He’s an orphan, and he’s had to grow up in a harsh place on his own. He thinks he’s responsible for protecting his two friends, including a little boy he’s practically raising. But he has no idea what he’s doing, and the city floor is a terrifying place to live. All of that to say, his anger comes from fear as well as some bitterness at feeling abandoned.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Story Mechanics Blog - How to Use the Hero’s Journey for Sequels - Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End</image:title>
<image:caption>This installment is the final chapter for Nathan Drake, an adventurous treasure hunter who’s encountered more than his fair share of strange and wild things in his travels. We catch up to Nathan several years after the events of Uncharted 3—he’s put away his maps and guns and is now doing legitimate work for a salvage company while his wife, Elena, works as a journalist. He’s wistful about adventure but dedicated to holding up his end of the bargain they made after their last adventure. However, his resolve is tested when the brother he thought long dead, Sam, walks back into his life.</image:caption>

<image:title>Story Mechanics Blog - How to Use the Hero’s Journey for Sequels - Expanding the in-world universe</image:title>
<image:caption>This story adds a lot of backstory to Nathan as a character. We learn more about his growing up in an orphanage in Boston, the mother who inspired a love of history and adventure in her sons, and the roguish older brother he looked up to. Sam Drake wasn’t a part of the series before Uncharted 4, and his sudden existence opens some gaping holes in Nathan’s backstory, including the fact that he never told Elena he had a brother (her frustration over that is mirrored by many long-time fans). The narrative attempts to patch these holes, but a long-lost brother is a difficult sell in the fourth installment of a series, and Act One has a lot of hard work to do to make it feel realistic.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Nathan drops everything to help his brother, which sets him off on a worldwide adventure chasing Captain Avery’s trail. To make this possible, he lies to Elena, saying he’s off on a salvage job. Hot on their heels is Rafe, who’s picked up the trail again as well, and they’re racing each other to the next clue. But Rafe plays by his own rules, hiring his own private army to blast his way through any obstacle, including Nathan and the others if necessary. He wants the fame of finding Avery’s treasure himself.</image:caption>

<image:caption>When we finally catch up to Nathan in the narrative present after this flashback (and yet another flashback, which we’ll talk about later), we learn that he’s longing for the adventures he used to have. However, while it’s understandable that Nathan might miss the action and discovery, giving us a tie to that younger self, we know that he’s older and wiser now. He’s seen things, including his brother dying in front of him. He also sees the value of the promise he made with Elena and the benefits of the life they share now that they’re not living dangerously. We know that his real conflict can’t be wanting adventure because it’s resolved as soon as Sam shows up. Sam’s problem promises adventure, and Nathan says yes right away. So what’s the real conflict?</image:caption>

<image:title>Story Mechanics Blog - How to Use the Hero’s Journey for Sequels</image:title>
<image:caption>This detour only provides backstory, and these stages don’t fit inside the overarching story of Uncharted 4, either thematically or structurally. Yes, this shows that Nathan still looks up to Sam and how devastated he is when he’s killed. However, most of his character development up until now was a result of getting close to someone and almost losing them (Elena in U2; Sully in U3). Now this flashback shows us that Nathan already lost the most important person in the world to him before we met him in U1, and this raises a lot of questions. Why did he keep going without Sam? Perhaps even more than Sully, Sam seems to be the one who led Nathan down this road and into trouble. Without his influence, why did Nathan keep going? Why didn’t Sully try to talk him out of pursuing this life after it happened, like how he confronted Nathan in U3 when things started to get dangerous?</image:caption>

<image:title>Story Mechanics Blog - How to Use the Hero’s Journey for Sequels - Revamping the Call for character development</image:title>
<image:caption>In a series, your character has been Called at least once before. They might be more eager this time rather than be reluctant as a result of the growth they experienced in the previous installment. However, it’s still important to use this stage to keep building tension and character. It’s easy to allow an external conflict be the reason the character is pushed back into the fray, but it’s more rewarding when an internal struggle and need to change are involved. Consider how you can incorporate what your protagonist has learned up until this point. How have previous events shaped your protagonist to handle these shifts? How can that experience and growth make the conflict of this installment more interesting or nuanced? How can you avoid slipping into clichés that might potentially distance your reader? Long-lost brother back from the dead is high up there. Are you skimming past this stage too quickly?</image:caption>

<image:title>Story Mechanics Blog - How to Use the Hero’s Journey for Sequels - Revamping the mentor</image:title>
<image:caption>This stage could benefit from a strong mentor role, preferably filled by Sully, who’s held the role for so long. Their reunion could further Nathan’s conflict as he has to face the fact that he’s going back on his word when he reaches out for the less-than-legit resources and connections Sully has. As it stands, we don’t even get to see how that conversation went down. There’s an understandable distance between them since Nathan’s gone straight, but if Elena doesn’t get to be the one saying this is a bad idea, Sully should be saying it. Sully is a valuable reference point since he’s known Nathan since he was a kid, and he’s also largely responsible for the life that Nathan has lived. Sully, too, changed significantly in the last game, and while he seems to believe it’s too late for him to change, he wholeheartedly supports Nathan moving on to a normal life. It would make sense for Sully to stick close after Sam shows up because he can see through Sam in ways Nathan can’t. He wants to watch out for his old friend. Sully and Nathan working together again could also demonstrate how much Nathan has grown as he becomes a pseudo mentor to Sam, something Sully could note. Naturally, it would be difficult for Nathan to take that role with his brother and for Sam to accept it, adding even more tension to their relationship.</image:caption>

<image:title>Story Mechanics Blog - How to Use the Hero’s Journey for Sequels - Revamping the Refusal</image:title>
<image:caption>The Refusal is a great opportunity for your character to define their growth so far, whether they mindfully take an inventory or simply reflect. What have they gained? What have they lost? In a series, your protagonist has been on the brink before, and the more they’ve done it, the better understanding they have of what can happen if they say yes. The Refusal should always stem from the conflict you’re building because change is painful, even if it’s necessary. Your character knows they need to change, but it shouldn’t be easy. Nathan’s restlessness indicates he’s not settled in himself yet. He’s still got some figuring out to do, perhaps a rebalancing of his priorities, and this is highlighted when Sam returns. However, the Call shouldn’t be a choice between throwing away everything he’s built in his life for one last ride or eking out a mundane existence. Rather, these options should represent the stakes, why he needs to change—neither one is really him. Nathan’s been playing it safe, maybe too safe. He needs to find a way to stay the man he’s committed to be while still pursuing what he loves. However, his hesitation should be a sense that that Sam will try and tell him who he is.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Looking to steal a ring that belonged to his ancestor, Sir Francis Drake, Nathan encounters Victor “Sully” Sullivan. The twist is that Sully is also trying to steal the ring for his shady employer, Katherine Marlowe. Sully and Nathan both make a play for the ring, and when Nathan takes off with it, Marlowe orders henchmen to take it back by force. One of them corners Nathan, but Sully shoots first and saves the kid. Sully offers to take Nathan in and hone his skills. He also offers to help him solve the mystery of Sir Francis Drake’s ring, which promises to reveal the location of great treasure.</image:caption>

<image:title>Story Mechanics Blog - Analyzing the Hero’s Journey in Uncharted 3 - Test, Allies, Enemies</image:title>
<image:caption>This stage is where the game actually begins. Nathan, twenty years older, and Sully tangle with a man called Talbot. He’s a minion of the main villain, Marlowe, who’s still seeking Nathan’s ring. They’ve finally gotten a lead on Sir Francis Drake’s mystery. Here, Sully takes on the role of ally. Nathan acquires more allies in the characters of Chloe Frazer and Charlie Cutter. Chloe and Cutter help Nathan as he attempts to discover Sir Francis Drake’s secret and how his ring is tied to the mystery.</image:caption>

<image:title>Story Mechanics Blog - Analyzing the Hero’s Journey in Uncharted 3</image:title>
<image:caption>In Yemen, Nathan’s reunited with Elena Fisher, his estranged wife who’s a foreign ambassador there. Elena acts as an ally, helping Nathan get access to different places in the city, but she is also a shapeshifter (a highly dynamic/changeable character who’s often a love interest). The relationship between Elena and Nathan is complex, and she’s torn between the reasons she left the relationship and the feelings she still has for Nathan. Elena furthers Nathan’s internal conflict by voicing concern for Sully, who’s devoted to Nathan. At this point, we begin to see Sully as a clone for Nathan, a vision of who he might be if he continues with his treasure-seeking ways. Sully enjoys the adventurous treasure-hunting life, but it’s the reason he has no real family. Nathan has to confront the fact he’s farther along that path than he thought.</image:caption>

<image:title>Story Mechanics Blog - Analyzing the Hero’s Journey in Uncharted 3</image:title>
<image:caption>Right after this, Talbot interferes and captures Nathan for Marlowe to interrogate him on what they found. On top of her questions, she reveals that Nathan’s surname is one he chose, and she plants doubt in his mind—did Sully save Nathan all those years ago or condemn him to this kind of life? Nathan escapes, but he encounters Talbot, who shows himself to be another clone for Nathan as well as a shadow—they look physically similar, are experts with weapons, and Talbot demonstrates what Nathan could become if he buries himself in treasure-hunting for the sake of the treasure itself, warped without concern for who gets hurt.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Elena, in Nathan’s absence, was planning to rescue Sully herself. Nathan, recent events wearing on him, shares a brief moment of rest with her and in an even rarer act, apologizes. The cracks in his self-confidence begin to show. Nathan plans to hide aboard a plane that’s taking off to supply Marlowe’s convoy, but he makes sure Elena doesn’t come with him. He knows it’ll be dangerous, and he doesn’t want to see her in harm’s way again because of his actions, which has been the case in the previous two games. She accepts his decision but still helps him onto the plane.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Story Mechanics Blog - Analyzing the Hero’s Journey in Uncharted 3 - Ordeal</image:title>
<image:caption>Nathan’s discovered, and the firefight onboard causes the plane to depressurize and crash. As the sole survivor, Nathan’s stranded in the desert with little hope of finding the convoy. As he grows more and more dehydrated, Nathan encounters mirages, first of water, then of Sully. He wanders the desert, forced to confront the doubtful voices of Marlowe and Elena as he deals with exhaustion and no shelter. Alone, Nathan has to decide what he’s really looking for in the desert. Constantly disappointed by hopes for water and rescue, Nathan clings to his desire to save Sully and fights the elements and more of Marlowe’s men to find him. A group of Bedouin help him find the convoy, but it’s clear that Nathan’s walked out of the desert with a new perspective. People are more important than treasure, a discovery that could serve as the armature for Uncharted 3.</image:caption>

<image:caption>In the lost city, Nathan drinks the water of the oasis, but the water is Ubar’s true secret and the reason the city was lost—it’s contaminated at the source and causes hallucinations. Nathan sees Talbot and Marlowe kill Sully and chases after them in a fury, threatening to falter in what he discovered in the Ordeal and become like Talbot. When he reunites with Sully, Nathan reorients to reality and commits himself once again to stopping Marlowe. They prevent Marlowe from taking the urn that’s polluting the water, keeping Ubar’s secret out of dangerous hands. But her careless excavation causes the city to start to crumble, and during the escape, Marlowe is trapped in quicksand. She pleads for Nathan’s help. Despite Sully’s discouragement, Nathan jumps in, acting on what he learned about people being more important.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Nathan and Sully escape from the city, which disappears into the sands for good. Back in Yemen, they reunite with Elena. Sully takes Nathan aside to apologize for the mistakes he made in being a father to him, admitting he is far from being perfect. He gives back Nathan’s wedding ring, something he’s held onto for “too long.” Later, Elena says she’s sorry for the loss of his other ring, but Nathan tells her that he traded it in for something better, making sure she sees he’s wearing his wedding ring again. Here at the end, Nathan demonstrates he’s internalized the lesson of his Ordeal as well as the Resurrection. He’s become more understanding of the people who care about him, more compassionate and wise. He realizes that his pride as a treasure hunter was pushing away the woman he loved and his oldest friend. The story ends with them leaving together, a more complete whole, a family.</image:caption>
